Update Rings

How to deploy an app using the Update Rings feature of Patch My PC Cloud

Important

This feature is currently only available through an invitation-only Private Preview, as both it and the documentation are under development, incomplete, and subject to change.

Please do not share links to these docs with others outside of the Private Preview.

Once this feature is released, it will be announced and this banner removed.

Update Rings for Intune Apps for Patch My PC Cloud allows you to specify a rollout plan for application updates that meets your business needs. It accomplishes this task by utilizing immediate deployments for each ring and moving those deployments between multiple versions of the application. This behavior gives the user maximum flexibility, including stopping rollouts, without manually managing deployments across several application versions. It’s important to note two things as a result:

#1: The first version of the application you deploy will be created with immediate deployments to all rings. The ability to manage rings for the initial rollout will be added before being released as generally available.

#2: You will not see deployment rings in action until the second version of the application is released. The service will move the assignments from the previous version to the latest version. The service does not use Intune's built-in capability to create delayed assignments.

The current Update Rings private preview release does not support editing existing Update Rings. This capability will be added before being released as generally available.

If the application is already being deployed you may wish to first remove existing deployments before creating Update Rings to avoid confusion.

To create a set of Update Rings for an application, begin deploying an application by selecting it from the catalog and clicking on the ‘Deploy’ button:

The General Information and Configuration pages remain the same, but the Assignments page now allows you to create Update Rings:

First, click the ‘Enable Update Rings’ button in the top left corner:

This will create two rings by default and allow you to add and remove rings that each have one or more assignments that are delayed by X number of days.

Add Update Ring: Click this to create a new ring.

Remove All Rings: Click this to remove all update rings and start from scratch.

Rename a Ring: Click on the edit icon of each ring to rename it:

Delete a Ring: Click on the X icon of each ring to delete it:

Reorder a Ring: Click the reorder icon and drag the ring to generate the desired ring order.

Add or Rename update rings as necessary to create the rollout stages you need.

For each ring, click the – and + buttons or directly enter the desired number of days to delay the deployment:

For each ring, click ‘Add Assignment’ to create Available, Required, Update Only, or Uninstall assignments to the specified Entra group:

When you have created the rings, delays, and assignments that meet your desired rollout strategy, click Next to review the Summary before clicking Deploy to create the deployments.

To review the status of your Update Rings, select the application from the catalog and click ‘More Info’:

You will then be presented with each ring, each assignment in that ring, and the current version being deployed to that assignment:

Upon ring creation, the latest version of the application will be created in Intune with all of the assignments from all of the rings set with immediate deployment:

This is currently by design, as these assignments will be moved to the next application release.

Future functionality will be released to support rings during the application's initial rollout.

When a new version of the application is released, we will see it created in Intune alongside the previous version:

Based on your Update Rings the assignments will be removed from the older version and added to the latest version:

We also see this reflected in the Patch My PC Cloud UI for this deployment:

Over time, all assignments will be moved to the latest version based on each ring’s delay.
